Aceasta arma, a rupt de multe ori echilibrul pe front, in WW1 dar si in WW2 (vezi luptele vanatorilor de munte romani in Caucaz).
Folosita in defensiva, intr-o cazemata, facea practic imposibila inaintarea trupelor de infanterie. La sfarsitul zilei, terenul din fata cazematei fiind transformat intr-o priveliste ingrozitoare, acoperit doar de cadavre.
