The CD Burner

Many years ago, owning a copy of your favorite singer or band would mean going to a retail store or buying from an online website.  With the average song count, you would spend at least $10.  If you were one of those who couldn't afford to buy a CD, you would probably have to wait for the local radio station to play the songs you liked.

These days however, several music download shareware programs make it possible to get your favorite songs directly from other uses without having to go out and buy them.  These programs will store the songs you download to your hard drive, or transfer it to your MP3 player if you prefer.

If you prefer to keep a complete collection of the songs by storing them to a disc, you'll need one piece of equipment for your computer - a CD burner.

The CD burner comes in two forms: internal and external.  External CD burners don't need to be
attached to your CPU, and they can be connected to your computer through a USB port with its own
power source.  The internal type of CD burner is the one that attaches to your CPU and fits on the inside of your computer tower.

The CD burner is quite the piece of equipment to have, as it can copy from one CD to another or even from a hard drive to a blank CD, and vice versa as well.

To use your CD player, you'll need to have software.  You can find some types of this software available to download for free on the internet.  Some great examples include ISO Recorder, Deep Burner, and Windows Media Player.

If you prefer, you can also purchase quality programs as well.  Some examples of these include Nero, Roxio, and Sonic Record Now.  The programs that are free have the same burning capacity, although those that cost money will give you more features and overall flexibility.

Keep in mind that CD burners aren't limited to only copying audio.  You can also use it to
copy document files, programs, games, videos, MP3, and many other types of files.

The burners with DVD burning capabilities will enable you to copy your favorite DVD to another
CD in case you want to share it with a friend or back it up.  You can also burn a movie to DVD if you downloaded it off the internet, then watch it on your television or computer.

Pros and cons of the Atkins diet

The Atkins diet is one of the most popular low carbohydrate diets on the market today. Its popularity has sparked dozens of look-a-like diets who center on the same principles of high-protein, low-carbohydrate eating. There are a lot of fish in the sea when it comes to choosing a low-carbohydrate plan.

Studies have shown that low-carbohydrate eating has many benefits. There have been scientific results that low-carbohydrate diets like Atkins do create significant weight loss without having to restrict calories. People who use the Atkins diet have also reported this. There are studies that show that low-carb eating improves triclycerides, reduces blood glucose for diabetics and pre-diabetics and increases good cholesterol (HDL). Low-carbohydrate dieting has been scientifically proven to improve insulin sensitivity, decrease blood pressure and lower blood insulin levels. When compared with low-fat diets, low-carb dieters lose less muscle mass.

Although not scientifically proven, there are many common benefits reported by Atkins dieters and other low-carb dieters. These include an increase in energy, a reduced craving for sweets, better concentration, improved mood and an lessening of depression type symptoms.

However, there are also some benefits that are specific to the Atkins diet. If you have been a low fat dieter in previous years, you’ll enjoy eating all of those “forbidden foods” that you once had to go without. Steak, butter and cream are a regular part of Atkins dieters’ meals. There is a certain pleasure that goes along with eating foods that were once off limits. Atkins dieters are encouraged to eat their full of rich meats, cheeses and fats and oils.

Atkins is also simple to use, compared with some other low-carb diets on the market. There are some basic food carbohydrate counts that you’ll need to learn, but after that, you are free to eat from the acceptable food lists.

Dr. Atkins also emphasized finding your own personal carbohydrate level. Different people have different levels of carbohydrate tolerance. While some gain weight on just 90 carbohydrate grams a day, others can live comfortably at 120 carbohydrate grams. During the ongoing weight loss phase and pre-maintenance phase of the diet, you will learn your personal carbohydrate count that will help determine your carbohydrate goal for life.

The popularity of Atkins is a double-edged sword for dieters. There is a lot of information available on the diet, which makes it easy to find resources and support. There have been many, many Atkins books written and there are endless amounts of websites that offer tips and group support. However, everyone has heard of Atkins and probably has an opinion on it. There are some big misconceptions out there about the nature of the diet, and you’ll no doubt have to defend your new way of eating from time to time.

There are some other minimal downsides to using the Atkins program. You do need to count carbohydrates in everything you eat to make sure that you are staying within your personal carbohydrate range. There is also the issue of Induction, the most hotly debate aspect of the plan. Induction can be difficult to get through if you’ve had a diet that centers on carbs and sugar. Also, many people try Induction and mistakenly believe that this is the way that the whole diet is going to be. They end up quitting before they get into the actual Atkins plan.

Sometimes, although it is not common, people will experience a carb crash on the 3rd to 5th day of the diet. This reaction is a result of their body finally experiencing ketosis, or running on fat instead of carbohydrates. The effects are transient, but many people have sworn off low-carb diets entirely because of this happenstance.

Overall, with the minor drawbacks considered, Atkins is one of the most popular low-carb diets for a reason. It works. Thousands of people have had success with the Atkins approach to the low-carb way of living.

All about Skiing

Skiing is a very popular winter sport that involves the thrill of being able to move swiftly down a hill. It is a sport that requires snowfall to be in place so it can only be done in the winter months. Some popular ski resorts have systems in place that help to make imitation snow so the ski season can continue even when there isn’t sufficient snow fall being provided by nature.

While it is easier to learn how to ski when you are young, it is a sport you can take up later in life. The more flexible that your body is the easier it will be for you to learn how to ski. It is a good idea to take the time to enroll in classes with a ski instructor. This way you don’t develop bad habits that you will simply have to break later on.

It is going to take plenty of practice for you to be able to master the basic skills of skiing. Don’t give up though because as you continue to improve your skills you will enjoy this winter sport more and more. Skiing is very fun and it is an excellent form of exercise due to the amount of muscles in your body that it works.

The slopes of skiing are accessed by taking a chair lift to the top and then selecting the one you want to go down. Each one is marked based on the challenge it posses and the level of difficulty. You should never go down ski slopes that are too advanced for your level of skills. You will be putting yourself and others at risk of injuries or death. Always stay on the market trails and pay attention to other skiers in the area. Most accidents that happen on ski slopes are the result of individuals not following the rules.

To ensure you stay warm while skiing you will need to dress in layers. This way you can take them off as you get warmer and put them back on when the temperature drops and the wind picks up. Ski suits will help to retain your body temperature and you will want to wear gloves and a hat. Ski goggles will help to protect your eyes from the glare of the sun and any debris. You also want to wear a pair of quality ski boots for traction.

For those with advanced skiing skills, the slopes may not offer enough of an adventure or thrill anymore. A great option is to try out cross country skiing. It is more difficult though because there isn’t any ski lift to take you to the top of the hill. You will have to climb up there on your own as most vehicles can’t go that deep into the terrain.

You also have to be very careful of the terrain as it won’t be cleared out like it is on a ski slope. Make sure you have the permission of the land owner to cross country ski on their land. It is a good idea to always have at least one other person with you and to let others know where you are at and when you will be returning. In most instances cell phones aren’t going to get quality reception in such areas.

Automatic Drip Coffee Makers

The most common type of coffee maker available is the automatic drip coffee maker.  Everyone has had one of these at one time or another and they are the most frequently purchased coffee makers ever made.  They are simple to use, the coffee tastes good, and they come with all sorts of options.  The automatic drip coffee maker ranges in price from as low as $15.00 to as much as $300.00 depending on brand, options, and what their specific purpose will be.  A standard 10 cup automatic drip coffee maker will cost a lot less than a larger or smaller automatic drip coffee maker as those are specialized units that serve a more specific purpose.

The automatic drip coffee maker works by putting water into the designated spot (usually on the back or side of the machine), adding a coffee filter, then dumping coffee grounds into the filter.  All that's left is to push the ON button and wait.  This ease of use is what makes the automatic drip coffee maker so popular.  Everyone can use it and it is also very easy to maintain.

Many automatic coffee makers come with a wide assortment of extra features.  The most common feature is a timer.  You can fill your automatic drip coffee maker with water and coffee grounds then specify what time you want your coffee maker to start brewing your coffee.  This is useful for people who work every day at 7 am and want to have coffee waiting for them right when they wake up.  It can be hard to get the motivation to prep your coffee every morning and it is easy to do it the night before.  Some models will reheat old pots, connect to a water line so you don't have to fill them, and have many other options you may like.

Automatic drip coffee makers can be found in every type of store you can imagine.  From supermarkets, to retail stores, to thrift shops, you are bound to see a vast selection to choose from.  There are many on line stores and websites that specialize in only automatic drip coffee makers so if you are comfortable shopping on line, that might be an option.  The great thing about on line shopping is that you are usually presented with many different deals.  You may receive a supply of coffee, get a free coffee of the month membership, or maybe have the ability to upgrade your coffee maker at a reduced price later on.

The coffee that you use in your automatic drip coffee maker is what will make all the difference in taste.  If you don't care about that and just want a cup of coffee, you can use any brand you like.  For those that have a particular love of coffee, they might try grinding their own beans or using a grinding device at a supermarket.  There are many kinds of coffee you can try with your automatic drip coffee maker.

Bungee Jumping Accidents

Bungee jumping is, by it's nature, a dangerous sport.  There is no denying that fact.  However, modern manufacturing methods and safety practices have made the sport much safer over the past decade.  It is certainly safer than the land diving of the South Pacific natives.  Unfortunately, even with all of these advances in the sport, bungee jumping accidents still occur.  In this article we will examine what can happen as a result of bungee jumping.

The most severe bungee jumping accidents can actually be fatal.  Most of the fatalities that have occurred in bungee jumping occur as a result of head trauma.  Miscalculation of the length of bungee cord necessary to complete the jump safely has resulted in several deaths since the sport became a public phenomenon in the late 1970s.  One of the most infamous deaths from bungee jumping occurred during practice for the half-time show of Superbowl XXXI, in 1997.  Laura Patterson, who was practicing with members of her professional team, died upon impact when she jumped from the top level of the Louisianna Superdome.  The accident was blamed on the bungee cords being handled incorrectly.  The half-time show was subsequently cancelled, and a tribute to Laura was performed instead.  Other deaths have resulted from people actually coming loose from the ankle harness.  This has led to the common practice of using a body harness as a back-up safety precaution.

Bungee jumping enthusiasts will be quick to point out, however, that there are only a handful of deaths from among millions of jumps that have been performed over the last few decades.  Even though this is true, there are many other types of bungee jumping accidents that can occur if strict safety guidelines are not followed.  Rope burn, pinched fingers and bruises are among the most common injuries suffered from bungee jumping.  While these may not be attributable to actual bungee jumping accidents, they can be considered an adverse side-effect by most people.

More serious than sprains and bruises are the possibilities of other bungee jumping accidents, such as severe eye trauma, dislocation, back injury, and even broken bones.  These are not highly publicized events, but they do occur nonetheless.  In the case of the eye trauma, increased pressure in the eye an cause a blood vessel to burst near the retina.  This results in blurred vision or loss of eyesight completely.  Although it sounds horrific, this is only temporary, until the body repairs the damage done.  Of more concern would be back injuries and broken bones.  In the case of back injuries, a dislocation or strain on the spine can cause a lifetime of pain and suffering.  That is something to take into account when weighing the risks of bungee jumping.

Bungee jumping accidents do occur, but they can be minimized by following established safety procedures.  It is up to you to ask the right questions.  It is up to the commercial company or club to ensure they have the right equipment and trained operators.  Bungee jumping can be fun, and does not have to involve serious injury if done correctly by trained operators and jumpers.
