Choosing the Best Plants for your Garden

Many times we buy plants on impulse then find there is nowhere in the garden that really suits them. Before buying plants carefully examine your garden to see how much sun and shade it gets, whether the soil is well drained or waterlogged and whether your aspect is sheltered or windswept. You'll then be equipped to go and buy the best plants for your situation; shade-loving plants for the sheltered areas, sun-lovers for the warm spots, drought-resistant plants for the parched areas which may be either sunny or shaded, and swamp plants for the poorly-drained parts.

But wait! Test your soil first, to determine the pH level of your soil and what kind of nutrients you need to add, if any. Is the soil acid or alkaline? Most plants prefer soil that is slightly acidic, but there are some that must have alkaline soil to grow.  You can alter the soil's pH level, but it's much easier to simply plant for the soil you have.

Now you are ready to plant. Well - almost. Will you plant in groups or singly? If you buy 'one of everything' your garden may seem rather spotty. Group plantings are organised, harmonious and you can vary the color for interest.

Before planting out, place your chosen plants around the garden bed in their pots to see how they will look. Re-arrange them until you are satisfied. Grouping plants in sets of threes or fives usually looks better than planting in groups of even numbers. Be sure that you have an interesting combination of colors and textures of plants. Tall plants should go to the back, or the centre if your garden will be viewed equally from all sides. Try to keep your plants away from trees. The roots of trees are fiercely competitive and will steal all the nutrients and moisture meant for your flowers.

The right color scheme is one way to maintain the harmony in your garden. Imagine the color of the flowers when they are in bloom. Some colors may clash with others, but can still be planted side-by-side if they have a different blooming season. Foliage color is also important. Many flower plants have silver, grey or purplish foliage that is just as attractive as the flower. This means that they are still attractive well past the blooming season and so have added value.

Organic Milk: Is it Worth It?

Espace Opéra Milk
Espace Opéra Milk (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Organic milk producers are quick to tell you that their milk is delicious and that it is made from cows untreated with antibiotics or growth hormones and cows not exposed to dangerous pesticides. Organic milk-producing cows are fed organic feed and are free ranging; the milk is pasteurized and homogenized like regular milk and it even contains vitamin D. Such claims have brought up the demand for organic milk, sometimes at double the cost of regular milk. Some consumers wonder,is it worth the added cost?

Some turn to organic milk in the belief that this milk is healthier, while others have strong environmental or animal rights’ beliefs. Research, however, is limited when it comes to comparing the health benefits of organic milk over conventional milk. This can be confusing to some milk drinkers. The United States Department of Agriculture has four specific requirements that help in the definition of which milk is organic and which milk is not. One requirement is that organic milk must come from cows never treated with bovine growth hormone, used to increase milk production. Some feel that milk treated this way could increase hormone-related cancers or affect growth hormone levels in humans. Interestingly, bovine growth hormone (BGH) is protein-related, meaning that if a human ingests it, the protein gets destroyed in the acidic environment of the stomach. In addition, while non-organic milk contains insulin growth factor (IGF-1), an individual would have to drink 95 quarts of milk a day to equal the amount of IGF-1 we produce in our bodies every day.

That’s not much of a disadvantage over organic milk. Several organic web sites have quoted a study showing that vegans have 13% less IGF-1 than non-vegans but, if you study the research more closely, you’ll find that IGF-1 levels were not related to milk consumption in either group nor was organic milk studied. Organic milk must come from cows free of antibiotic treatments. If a cow is treated with an antibiotic, it is removed from the herd for a year. Still, conventional herds of cows cannot give milk until tests show that the milk is antibiotic-free.Tanks of milk are tested for the presence of antibiotics on a regular basis.

Another requirement for organic milk is that the cows are fed feed that is grown without pesticides. Some USDA reports indicate that non-organic milk may be allowed to contain small amounts of specific pesticides, below established tolerance levels. Research has not found any health issues related to pesticides in cow feed and health risks in humans. Finally, organic milk must come from cows that have “access to pasture”. Some consumers envision year-round grazing of happy cows. However, as there is no minimum requirement, organic milk can come from cows that have had limited access to a pasture.

There are those who believe that pasture-fed cows produce more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)—an essential fatty acid found to be protective against cancer. Experts, on the other hand, say that grass feeding alone does not definitely lead to increased CLA levels. Cows fed mixed grains and soybeans, in fact, can produce milk with levels of CLA higher than that in organic milk. Organic milk may taste better to some and is animal-friendly; however it doesn’t necessarily mean it is healthier for you than the much-cheaper conventional milk.

Breast Feeding And Jaundice

Jaundice is a result of buildup in the blood of the bilirubin, a yellow pigment that comes from the
breakdown of older red blood cells.  It's normal for the red blood cells to break down, although
the bilirubin formed doesn't normally cause jaundice because the liver will metabolize it and then get
rid of it in the gut.

However, the newborn baby will often become jaundiced during the first few days due to the
liver enzyme that metabolizes the bilirubin becoming relatively immature.  Therefore, newborn babies  will have more red blood cells than adults, and thus more will break down at any given time.

Breast milk jaundice There is a condition that's commonly referred to as breast milk jaundice, although no one knows what actually causes it.  In order to diagnose it,the baby should be at least a week old.The baby should also be gaining well with breast feeding alone, having lots of bowel movements with the passing of clean urine.

In this type of setting, the baby has what is  referred to as breast milk jaundice.  On occasion,
infections of the urine or an under functioning of the baby's thyroid gland, as well as other
rare illnesses that may cause the same types of problems.

Breast milk jaundice will peak at 10 - 21 days, although it can last for 2 - 3 months.  Contrary
to what you may think, breast milk jaundice is normal.  Rarely, if at all ever, does breast
feeding need to be stopped for even a brief period of time.

If the baby is doing well on breast milk, there  is no reason at all to stop or supplement with
a lactation aid.

Installing Carpet

A majority of how your interior looks and feels will depend on your floors.  Houses that have carpet
give off an undeniable warmth, vibrancy, and an aesthetic appeal.  There is a wide range of colors,
textures, materials, and designs available that can transform your home and give every room a chance
to be unique.  Your carpet installation has a long term perspective, so it's important that you select
the best one for your needs and install it right the first time.

Once you have picked out your material and design, you'll need to it install it.  Professional carpet
installers can do the job for you, or you can choose to do it yourself.  Even though doing it yourself
is cheaper than hiring a professional, it isn't  recommended if you don't have the right tools, lack
time, or have no experience.

A great way to ensure a professional installation of your carpet is to buy from an authorized carpet
retailer or dealer.  Most of the time, your carpet retailer will have an installation staff that is very experienced with installing carpet.

If the retailer doesn't offer an installation  service, they can still guide you to a reputable and experienced installer.  Even though installation by a retailer is a bit more expensive, it offers
several advantages.  The experience will show in their work and you'll come out better in the long
run.  You can also approach them if you aren't satisfied with anything they have done.

However, if you are looking for low budget carpet installation services, you'll also have the option
of hiring independent contractors, architects, builders, or interior designers. You should always remember to get their references and inquire about their experience, where they received their
training, and any certification they may have.

You can also visit homes that the installer has previously worked on, as this will give you an
idea of their work before you hire them. If it isn't possible, you should at least make it a point to see some pictures of their work.

Even though private contractors may offer a lower rate for carpet installation than your retailer,
the services of post installation may be very poor.  If you encounter a problem, you'll find
that your options are limited.  No matter what happens, if you choose an independent carpet
installer, you should always make sure that the installer follows the standard for installation of residential carpet CRI 105.

Choosing the right installer for your carpet will entirely depend on your specific needs.  If you
like to change your carpet type every few years, you may be better off to choose an independent
carpet installer.  If you want carpet that will last for a long time, you should get a follow up
from a retailer, as this will ensure that you have a trouble free experience with installation.

No matter who you choose, you should ensure prior to installation the carpet is power stretched
so wrinkling and rippling will be minimized. It is also important that your rooms are measured before laying any of them and the sub floor has been cleaned.

You should also vacuum the old carpet good before it is removed, to help eliminate dust.Once the new carpet is down, the edges should be trimmed and sealed with hardwood. You should always inspect the carpet, and make sure that nothing looks out of the ordinary and that everything pleases you before you finish the deal.

You should always keep in mind that no matter how expensive or exotic your carpets may be, it
is the installation process that makes or breaks the look of your home. Therefore, it pays off
to invest a bit of time, money, and effort when  you choose the right installer for your carpet.

Accepting the Diagnosis of Autism

Receiving a diagnosis of Autism can seem overwhelming. You may be left with a lot of unanswered questions about the diagnosis. You might be thinking the diagnosis is wrong. This cannot be happening to your child. There are different feelings and emotions you will experience when dealing with a diagnosis of Autism. Here are some of the ways you might be feeling, and ways to come to terms with the diagnosis.

Denial

Denial is a  common feeling when dealing with any medical problem. Sometimes it is  easier to deny that there is even a problem. Some parents do not want to consider that there could be something wrong with their child. So they pretend like there is nothing wrong. The doctor was wrong, their child is perfectly normal. Being in denial about the diagnosis will not help anything. The sooner that you accept that your child is Autistic the better both of you will be. The condition will not go away if you ignore it. Accepting the diagnosis and moving on will be a huge step for you as a parent to take. The quicker this is done the sooner you can start looking into treatment options.

Anger

Anger is one of the emotions you might feel when you get a diagnosis of Autism. You might be angry with yourself, or angry with God. Why is your child Autistic. You might be angry with other parents that have healthy children. This is a normal feeling to experience. Remember while you are feeling angry to think of all the great things about your child. Share your feelings with others. Keeping anger bottled up can be a bad thing.

Grief

Sometimes when a parent gets a diagnosis of Autism they go though a grieving period. They are sad that their child has something wrong with them. They may be feeling sad that the dreams  they had for their child may have to change. They might be sad over the way the world will treat their child, and the hardships they will face. Grief is a normal emotion to go through. The key is to get through the grief, and on to the acceptance. Try not to look at the things that are wrong. There will have to be some adjustments made to your plans for your child's future. That is what life is all about , change. If you find yourself unable to move past the grieving stage you might need to talk to someone. It might help having a few therapy sessions to deal with the feelings you are experiencing.

Acceptance

Finally coming to terms with the diagnosis of Autism can take awhile. Some people are just glad to have an answer to what is wrong with their child. Others have a hard time accepting their child is different from other kids. Eventually you will accept that your child is different, and that is okay. Once you have accepted the diagnosis of Autism you can start to help your child. Do all the research you can on Autism. Think about how hard it is for your child. They need you to be behind them in their treatments one hundred percent. The first step to doing this is acceptance.

7 Blocks To Creative Thinking And How To Solve Them

Each of us has the power to be creative. It's part of our natural make-up as human beings. The trouble is that, too often, we block our natural creativity and so make errors in thinking and give ourselves more problems than we should. Here are 7 ways to open up your natural creativity and keep the channels unblocked.

  1. Don't Make Assumptions.

When we assume, we often make an "ass" out of "u" and "me". Assumptions are examples of lazy thinking. We simply don't wait to get all the information we need to come to the right conclusions. There is the story of the customer at the bank who after cashing a cheque and turning to leave, returns and says: "Excuse me, I think you made a mistake." The cashier responds, "I'm sorry but there's nothing I can do. You should have counted it. Once you walk away we are no longer responsible." Whereupon the customer replies: "Well, okay. Thanks for the extra $20." Tip: When you feel yourself wanting to draw conclusions, just wait until you have all the information.

  2. See Things From Other Points Of View.

A truly open mind is willing to accept that, not only do other people have other just as valid points of view from theirs, but that these other points of view may be more valid. A story is told that the modernist painter Pablo Picasso was once traveling on a train across Spain when he got into conversation with a rich businessman who was dismissive of modern art. As evidence that modern art didn't properly represent reality, he took out a photo of his wife from his wallet and said: "This is how my wife should look, not in some silly stylized representation." Picasso took the photo, studied it for a few moments and asked: "This is your wife?" The businessman proudly nodded. "She's very small," observed Picasso wryly. Tip: Don't have a monopoly on how things are. Things aren't always what they seem. Be ready to consider other points of view.

  3. Avoid Yo-Yo Thinking.

Some people tend to have a tendency to swing from a highly positive mood one minute to a highly negative one the next, all because of what they see in front of them. It's like a yo-yo: up one minute, down the next. It's far more healthy to stay neutral and not let emotions get the better of you. Tip: Remember that things are rarely as good - or as bad - as you think they are.

  4. Get Rid Of Lazy Thinking Habits.

Habit can be a major stumbling block to clear thinking and another example of laziness. Try this experiment. Write down the Scottish surnames Macdonald, Macpherson, and Macdougall and ask someone to pronounce them. Now follow these with the word Machinery and see what happens. Most people are likely to mis-pronounce it. This is because we tend to think in habitual ways and don't like what doesn't fit. Tip: Don't think that, just because things happened in a certain way once before, that they will happen like that again.
  5. Don't Think Like An Old Person, Think Like A Child.

Research shows that the number of synapses, or connections, in the brain is greater in a child of two than in an average adult. The reason for this is that, while a child of two has no limiting world view, as adults we do. It's like a sculptor who starts off with a large block of clay, more than he needs, and then gradually removes the clay as he moulds his sculpture. If we use our brain like a child, accepting everything without judgment, we can actually halt and reverse the brain ageing process. Tip: Don't worry about the myth of age. With the right stimulus and a passion for learning, you can actually improve your brain's powers.

  6. See The Detail As Well As The Big Picture.

You may know the poem by John Godfrey Saxe called "The Blind Men and the Elephant". This tells how six blind men of Indostan go to see an elephant and each try to work out what it is from touching it. One blind man touches the tusk, another the trunk, another the tail, and so on. Of course, not being able to see the whole elephant, they come to wildly different conclusions. Tip: Try to keep the big picture in front of you while looking at details. It will help to put everything in its proper place and context.

  7. Think For Yourself.

Taking time out to think is still frowned on in many organizations that prize activity over creativity. People who work in creativity-constrained organizations are likely to think the way they are supposed to think, or as others think, or as has always been the way to think. It's like the blinkered thinking that Hans Christian Anderson describes in his story of "The Emperor's New Clothes". Everyone in the land refuses to see that the emperor is naked and has been duped into believing he is wearing a splendid costume for his coronation. Only a young boy who has been ill and not party to the cultural brainwashing can see the truth and cries out: "Look, everyone, the Emperor is wearing no clothes!" Tip: Don't let others tell you how to think. When others ask your opinion, tell it to them straight. Once you make these 7 techniques part of your habitual thinking patterns, you will amaze yourself with how easy it is to come up with fresh, innovative and creative solutions to all of life's problems.

You probably don’t want it to get wet if it rains, or get too much dust when you're on the outside.

One effective way of carrying your camera safely is putting it inside a camera bag. This not only protects your camera from harsh weathers but also keeps it from being stolen. By now, you're aware that there are a lot of people out there who are looking for likely victims for their crimes like robbery and hold ups.

Choosing a bag for your camera can be rather time consuming. Either you find a bag which is too small or you find one that is too big. Perhaps, it's a good idea to bring your camera when you go shopping for a camera bag.

Some bags are great for storing your camera along with its other accessories, but you can never be satisfied with just one bag. Sometimes, you find camera bags which are not padded enough to allow full camera protection. In this case, you can make use of bean bags.

There are bean bags especially made for cameras, like the one manufactured by Adorama. The Adorama bean bag supports the camera and its lenses. All bean bags are designed to support your camera if your camera bag has too much space. Putting camera bean bags gives added protection so you can be sure that no matter how much you move, you're camera will be secured.

Bean bags are cheap. In fact, you can find camera bean bags for less than ten dollars. So you can purchase any camera bag you like, and if there is a need for a bean bag, just put it inside the camera bag.

The camera bag alone has also other uses. It can be used to carry other things, so just to make sure that you have a spare bean bag for your camera so that it won't get in the way of your other personal things.

Bean bags come in different colors; but the most common are blue and black. It's a very useful accessory if you have a camera bag. If you can't find the one that you're looking for in online stores, you can also do some shopping around in your local stores. Bring your camera along and see if the bean bags suit your camera.

Carpet Repair

How often you need to repair your carpet depends on you. There are instances such as burns, crushing, fading, furniture, bleeding, sprouting, and carpet beetles where you'll want to take action.  Most of the time, you can finish a repair job without needing a professional, although there will be times when you will need professional assistance.

Burns

Burns occur when a cigarette butt or flame comes  in contact with the carpet.  If the burn is small,
the burnt fibers of the carpet can be cut out with scissors.  If the burn is large, you'll need to
replace the area with a new piece of carpet.  You  can do this yourself if you know how, or have an
installer do it.

Fuzzing

This occurs when loose fibers come out on the edges of the carpet.  To fix this, simply cut the fibers
that are sticking out.

Furniture marks

Heavy furniture can result in indentations being left on the carpet.  To get rid of these nasty marks, you should sprinkle your carpet with some club soda, place a towel over the area, then iron
it.  Do this a couple of times and you will see  your carpet begin to re-fluff.

Shading, crushing, and matting

A lot of traffic on the surface of the carpet will cause it to flatten, which may give some types of carpet a shaded appearance.  If this happens, you should brush and vacuum the area.  If you can't fix the problem, you may need to hire a professional,as this can sometimes be very tricky.

Shedding and snagging

Shedding is a problem of usage, as the fibers will surface on the carpet.  This isn't a defect in
manufacturing, but a normal problem.  To fix it, you'll need to vacuum the area.  The snags on
the other hand are tufts that have pulled out of the surface of the carpet.  They will occur more
often with loop pile than cut pile carpets.  You should never pull them off, but instead cut them
off neatly with a pair of scissors.

Sprouting

A carpet is known to have sprouts only when there are tufts on it, which are longer than the rest.
As pulling on them will only damage the carpet more, you should trim them off with scissors and
level them down to the rest of the pile.

Static electricity

This depends on the carpet material, construction, and padding.  Humidity will play an important role
as the moisture in the air is absorbed by the carpet fibers.  A humidifier will help to retain
moisture, and you can also spray the surface of the carpet with an anti static agent.

Carpet beetles

The best way to deal with carpet beetles is with a strong vacuum suction.  You should always avoid
spillage and keep the surface of the carpet clean of food.  The carpet beetles are quite annoying,
as they feed on wool, hair, hides, fur, grain, seeds, and flour.  If the carpet is infested bad,you professional cleaner is the way to go.

Bleeding or crocking

Bleeding of the carpet is the loss or transfer of the color from one section to another.  Good
underlayments can help to prevent bleeding to a certain degree.  Crocking on the other hand is
the loss of the carpets color when it is rubbed. To avoid this, simply avoid getting your carpet
wet.

A carpet installation job that is one right can help you reduce your repair worries to quite
an amazing degree.  You can always call a pro as well, as their services will often end up being
much cheaper than if you were to go ahead and replace the entire carpet.
